Long-Term Host Family Requirements

Host are required to provide the student with a private room, with a window, furnished with a bed, desk/study table, desk lamp, closet, mirror, and dresser. The host is also responsible for supplying bed linens and bath towels.

Hosts are responsible for meeting their student upon their arrival.  If you cannot make the arrival it is your responsibility to make arrangements for the student to be met and taken to your home. Also if such an arrangement is made you must notify CPCI in advance of an arrangement. You must ensure that someone is with the student until you are available.

Hosts should orient their students to their home and neighborhood soon after the student arrives. Show them how to work appliances and discuss house rules with them. Then, show them around the neighborhood, pointing out the bus stop, the corner store, the mailbox, etc. Please help them fill out their ID cards with your address and contact numbers in case the student gets lost.

Hosts are encouraged to welcome the students as a member of their family. As such you should welcome the student to your home, include them in family outings, activities and spend time with the student during the evenings and weekends. While you are not obliged to arrange special trips or visit for your student, extra attention given to the student always results in a better relationship and good memories.

Hosts are expected to provide three meals a day plus snacks for the students. The student is responsible for preparing breakfast and lunch for themselves but please offer guidance when necessary. Bagged lunches, especially sandwiches, are often new to students. The evening meals are to be prepared by the host. The student is responsible for letting you know in advance if they will not be home for dinner. Dinner should be set aside for the student to have later or for lunch the next day.

Hosts are responsible for providing laundry facilities (i.e. washer & dryer) for the student’s use. You should show your student how to operate the machines and do a load with them so they understand. You are also expected to provide laundry detergent but students are responsible for doing their own laundry.

Students are not expected to do any “heavy “housework such as vacuuming or dusting. However, they are responsible for keeping their room tidy and clean. You should supply the necessary cleaning tools for the student. The student is encouraged to help out with dinner preparation and clean up as it is a good time for them to practice their English and feel like part of the family, but it is not required of them.

All students must be given a key to the house so that they may come and go as a family member. Students 18 and older are considered adults and do not have a curfew as such. However, please discuss with you student the importance of locking the door and being quiet when they come in. All students are responsible for letting you know what their plans are and an approximate time they will be returning home.

CPCI will place students who attend ESL schools, in homes located within a 30 minute bus ride  without transfer (the walk from home to the bus stop is to be no longer than 10 minutes), from the school. The host is required to take the bus with the student to and from downtown prior to the start of classes so as to ensure that the student is familiar with the bus route and has a bus pass. If you are unable to take your student on the bus before school begins please take your student to school and meet him/her afterward on the first day so that they do not get lost. The school information will be sent to the families beforehand.
